Is My Product Idea Worth Building? A 10-Minute Framework
A product idea is worth building when it has payment evidence, a concrete use case, and a competitor density grade of yellow or green after an 8-field scan. If you can't find people already paying for something close, the idea is a hypothesis, not a market, no matter how good it feels. This 10-minute framework is the same one we run on every idea we touch, and it's packaged in the Opportunity Validation PRO skill.
Most of us decide what to build on excitement. That's how you end up building the thing nobody buys. This framework replaces the gut feeling with a quick, repeatable check you can run before writing a line of code.
The 10-minute framework: 8 fields, one verdict
Write your idea down and score it across these 8 fields. You don't need all 8 perfect; you need to know where the risk sits.
- Direction — the specific long-tail direction, not the category. "AI notes" is a category. "AI notes that auto-link to your calendar tasks" is a direction.
- Background — the problem and who has it, stated concretely.
- Use case — the exact trigger moment someone reaches for this. Vague use case means no one reaches for it.
- Payment evidence — can you find 3+ real buyers paying for something close? Reviews, public revenue, "X is worth it" threads count.
- Competitor analysis — for each real competitor: price, feature set, marketing channel, density grade.
- SaaS-ification path — can this become recurring revenue, or is it a one-off service?
- Agent feasibility — can an AI agent do the core work? If a competitor sells a SKILL.md that does your whole job for $19, that's density you can't ignore.
- Evidence — the receipts: links, screenshots, search snapshots, pricing pages. This field stops you from convincing yourself.
How to grade the verdict
- Build: payment evidence present AND density is yellow or green. This is the only combination that justifies code.
- Re-scope: density is red, or no payment evidence. Re-narrow the direction and re-run the scan. Re-scoping is free.
- Drop: red density AND no payment evidence. No framing will save it; the demand isn't there.
What the framework looked like in practice
We ran this on 7 long-tail directions in Sept 2026. Three came back red with commodity pricing and no clear edge (AI resume builders, generic writing assistants, no-code website builders). One came back yellow-green: "opportunity validation for solo founders." A few adjacent tools existed, but nobody owned the framing of checking density before you build. That one passed the framework and became our product. The others didn't get built. The framework didn't just save us time; it told us exactly where to put it.
The one field that matters most
If you only have time for one field, make it payment evidence. An idea with payment evidence and mediocre everything else beats an idea with a perfect use case and no proof anyone pays. Demand is the whole game. Everything else is execution, and execution is the easy part compared to finding a market.
